The venue is booked, the date has been set, and the set-lists are coming in. It can only mean one thing…. mallowstreet Rocks is back for 2017.
For those of you not in the know, mallowstreet Rocks is the only place to be on Thursday 23rd March 2017. As bands from within the pensions industry battle it out to be crowned champion (and knock BlackRocket off their winner’s perch). But first they’ve got to get past our panel of judges, and of course the audience’s vote counts too!
Loads of bands have their own backstage ritual, many of which can be seen on the walls of the O2 Academy Islington. Signatures and lyrics cover every available inch in the wings, where many a famous name has waited. I even spotted a few of last year’s competitors adding to the walls as they waited for their turn. Going through that curtain and out into the lights, hearing 400 fans cheering as they play those first few chords. I don’t know how they did it. If it was me I would bolt. But with their wigs in place and tambourines in hand every band has stepped up to the mark and impressed the crowd. Our judges can sometimes be a little harder to impress, watch out for one judge in particular (he seems to have taken it upon himself to be our version of Simon Cowell – tight t-shirt and all!)
The line-up for the next show is getting underway, with some returning and some new competitors. And I for one can’t wait! There’s still one space available, so if there’s any musical fantasies in the team then just drop in your demo tape! Only joking an email will do.
While it’s a great night out with some seriously good music- I know, I didn’t expect it either the first time I went – mallowstreet Rocks has a purpose. And that’s charity. Since its inception, mallowstreet Rocks has raised over £70,000 for charities across the UK and globe. Our panel of judges name the wining band who will take home the lion’s share of all monies raised, with all other bands also receiving a donation. To date, mallowstreet Rocks has made donations to over 30 different charities, including:
Cancer Research UK, MS-UK, Nordoff Robbins, London's Air Ambulance, JDRF, and Cavell Nurses Trust
This year we are hoping to raise £10,000 and help continue the good work. So add the date to your diary and keep an eye out for tickets, going on sale in early 2017.
